В статье рассматривается символ бабочки – один из сквозных в поэзии и живописи первого английского романтика Уильяма Блейка. Этот образ представлен в творчестве Блейка как триада, символизирующая человеческую жизнь: «сaterpillar» (гусеница) – человек, живущий без Бога; «chrysalis» (кокон) – ищущий Истину человек; «butterfly» (зрелая бабочка) – человек, духовно прозревший и познавший Бога. Триединство у Блейка напрямую связано с мотивом инициации, который является смысловой осью его творчества.

The symbol of a butterfly is considered in the article. It is one of through symbols in poetry and painting of the first English romanticist William Blake. Romanticists overcame a tradition of "the ready word" (M.Bakhtin's term), a canon of forms and the genres, the set style, and also affirmed a role of a multiple-valued symbol in the art text. Symbolical text is always dialogical. The reader inevitably enters the communication with the author, trying not only to comprehend an author's thought, but also interpreting a symbol according to his own reception. Thus, romanticists made the real discovery in the communication sphere, between the author and the reader. The image of a butterfly is presented in Blake's poetry as a triad symbolizing human life: "caterpillar"– the person living without God; "chrysalis" (cocoon) – the person looking for Truth; "butterfly"– the person who began to see clearly in the spirit and knew God. This triad is directly connected with motive of initiation which is a semantic axis of Blake's mythology.
