Abstract
[RUS]

The article highlights the images of the time found in the art of the ancient world. One of the oldest is the juxtaposition of the sacred (mythological) and ordinary (profane) time. Events of mythical time become the prototype of actions in calendar cycle, then single acts of creation are being played in holiday actions. The idea of the world gyre is related in the mythological consciousness with the idea of the cosmos as a whole and organized the universe. The most common cycles are annual, monthly (lunar) and seven-day (week). In addition, people proposed the idea of a global multi-year cycles, or periods. In advanced mythologies, representing the universe as an arena of chaos and cosmos struggle, along with the way of the first time there is an image of end of times, end of the world, to be or not to be cyclical renewal. Every year (month, day) in a loop gets its mythological interpretation. The appearance of the first calendars associated with symbolization of time periods. The first names of the months are often correlated with the nature of their work in the agricultural cycle. The author traces the origin and development of the Zodiac images from their beginnings in Mesopotamia to the Byzantine mosaics. Art of Ancient Middle Ages has left a rich legacy of calendar cycles images: the mentioned months allegories, images of the zodiac, ages and seasons.
