В данной статье речь пойдет о полузабытом образе талантливого, горемычного и ненасытного в познании жизни и науки, упрямого в борьбе с судьбой, непоколебимо честного в своих убеждениях Ивана Гавриловича Прыжова, труды которого весьма актуальны для постсоветской России.

The name Ivan Gavrilovic Pryzhov – an eminent historian, ethnographer and journalist of the second half of the XIX century – known today is not for everyone. He had difficult, unjust and evil destiny. Accused by "Nechayev case", first he was expelled from Moscow University, enclosed in the Peter and Paul Fortress, and then, after the procedure of civil penalty, exiled to hard labor in Eastern Siberia. In those places where once Decembrists were confined at hard labour, he spent more than 10 years and died in obscurity.
Although the name of I.G. Pryzhov has been returned to the Russian history by the efforts of some scientists, but in the interpretation of his relationship to the Russian history, in the assessment of his true contribution to science still known very few even by professional historians. In this paper an attempt is made to recreate, at least in fragments, the image of this man and scientist, to introduce the reader to the world of Pryzhov's understanding of the features of Russian history; considering that Pryzhov passed away almost 130 years ago, his ideas remain relevant and in demand both in science and in socio-cultural practices.
