The article is devoted to the study of stereotypes in intercultural communication. The focus is on issues of formation of ethno-cultural stereotypes: heterostereotypes and autostereotypes. Ethno-cultural stereotypes are understood as relatively stable representation of the moral, intellectual, physical qualities common to the members of different ethnic communities. Stereotypes are "built into" the system of individual values. That's why there is always a stereotyping in intercultural communication. The functions of ethnocultural stereotypes and the problem of effective communication with the use of stereotypes are analyzed; the author explores moments when stereotypes contribute to or hinder effective cross-cultural communication. The author concludes that the effective stereotyping helps people to understand the situation and act in accordance with the new circumstances. Stereotypes can be ineffective and can even impede communication in the case when, guided by them, people are mistakenly attributed to groups, incorrectly describe the group norms, when people confuse stereotypical descriptions with describing a particular individual, and when you can not modify the stereotypes based on actual observations and experience.
