В настоящее время в непрофильных вузах в отношении гуманитарных дисциплин осуществляется политика свертывания (сокращения предметов и часов). Этот процесс идет в контексте той реформы высшего образования, которую уже несколько лет проводит Министерство образования России. При этом сохраняется главная задача гуманитарных дисциплин – эффективно продолжить социализацию студентов и подготовить выпускников к успешному включению не только в профессиональную деятельность но и в общественную жизнь. Автор предлагает серьезную дискуссию о месте и роли преподавания гуманитарных дисциплин в вузах России не только в вузовском сообществе, но и, главным образом, в органах государственной власти и в структурах гражданского общества.

The article presents the results of sociological surveys conducted in the universities of the Orenburg region, in which an increase of ethnic intolerance among students was recorded. One of the factors preventing such acts should be regarded as an effective teaching of the humanities especially in non-humanitarian universities. Meanwhile the opportunities of university teams to build a tolerant political culture of students are substantially limited with the reduction of teaching the humanities; in particular, the abolition of political science, cultural studies, philosophy course reduction in nonspecialized universities. Another problem is the low level of literary and cultural outlook of large part of the students, the lack of serious reading skills, mastering of self-preparation. Most of students today have underdeveloped susceptibility to oral and written information, long-term memory, the ability to collate facts, and low critical thinking. Students often have great difficulty with expressing their thoughts. Meanwhile, these abilities are formed primarily by humanities. We need a serious debate about the place and role of the teaching of the humanities in universities in Russia, not only in higher education community, but also, and mainly, in government and in the structures of civil society. The quality of the humanities teaching in higher education depends on the level of general and political culture of our youth, and, consequently, the future of Russia.
