Статья посвящена анализу работ британских учёных (В.Б. Друммонд, Дж. Селли) XIX века по проблеме поиска объективных методов исследования психического развития ребёнка. Выявлены достоинства и ограничения в применении метода наблюдения. Раскрыта проблема создания адекватных детскому развитию методов исследования с целью внедрения полученных результатов в практическую и педагогическую деятельность.

At the end of XIX century the paedological movement began to grain ground in Great Britain- a movement in favor of childhood study; a large body of research was made, networks of institutions, departments and laboratories were set up. To the foreground comes out the problem of experimental study of a child's mental development. But this progress was preceded by a long-time search of objective and scientific methods of inquiry of a child's mental development. The article is devoted to the analysis of works by the British scientists of the XIX century (W.B. Drummond and J. Sully) on the problem of searching of objective methods of a child's mental development study. The comparative analysis of the scientists' concepts highlighted the advantages and restrictions in application of the observation method; made it possible to describe similarities and distinctions in scientists' points of view on the problem of a child's study; to discover the regularities of searching and creation of research methods suitable for child development for the purpose of implementation of the obtained results in practical and educational work. The article discloses the periods and reasons for the change of approaches to a child's study; analyzes the difficulties a scientist can encounter when studying the mental development of a child; discovers the requirements as to researches who investigate childhood; describes the major problems and schedules the further perspective solutions concerning the problems of mental and physical development of children.
