В статье делается попытка описания важного для Уильяма Блейка образа Барда – Певца, Поэта и Пророка, с которым Блейк, как правило, ассоциировал самого себя. Истоки этого образа мы находим в пиндарической оде Томаса Грея «Бард», написанной, по странному совпадению, в 1757 – в год рождения самого Блейка, и произведшей на молодого поэта и художника неизгладимое впечатление, что отразилось в серии его изобразительных работ, его собственной поэзии, а также прозаическом отрывке из «Описательного каталога» выставки 1809 года, где Блейк излагает своё понимание поэтического и пророческого видения – редкостным даром которого он обладал в полной мере. В статье даётся русский перевод фрагмента оды Грея (поскольку другие переводы автору статьи неизвестны), а также трёх стихотворений и прозы самого Блейка.

In this article the author makes an attempt to describe the importance of the theme of Bard for William Blake and his work. The Bard is an image of a Singer, Poet and Prophet that Blake always associated with himself. The origins of this image is found in the Pindaric ode by Thomas Gray, "The Bard," written by a strange coincidence, in 1757, the year when Blake was born. Blake was familiar with the ode in his early years, and the subject of it, based on a Tradition current in Wales, that Edward the First, when he completed the conquest of that country, ordered all the Bards, that fell into his hands, to be put to death, made a great impression on the young poet and artist. Blake expressed his vision and understanding of this subject in a series of his paintings and graphic works, in his own poetry as well as in a prose passage from "The Descriptive catalogue" of Blake's Exhibition of 1809, in which he explains his understanding of the poetic and prophetic vision – a rare gift that he possessed in full measure. All these works of Blake in different genres are closely related. The article includes the necessary illustrative material as well as the Russian translation of a fragment of the ode by Gray (as other translations are unknown to us), three poems by Blake and his prose passage.
